The What Cheer? Brigade is a 19‐piece brass band from Providence, RI, USA. Their sound is an aggressive mix of Bollywood, The Balkans, New Orleans, Samba and Hip‐Hop, played with the intensity of metal. Requiring no amplification, they call their sound Luddite Hardcore—proof that loud music doesn’t need electricity. A raucous live experience, the Brigade defies categorization, appealing equally to punks and farmers, old and young. Since 2005, the band has been as likely to appear at sweaty clubs, parties and festivals as at community events.
What Cheer? goes with anything that gets people moving, from bands to DJs. They’ve played with Dan Deacon, Man Man, Lightning Bolt, Japanther, Dengue Fever, Okkervil River, Wolf Parade, Ninjasonik, Matt and Kim, Javelin, Sage Francis, and Chain and the Gang.
